
The Bainum Hotel at Fourth and Market first opened in 1880 as the Arlington Hotel. In 1897 it became the Ream Hotel. In 1916 E.H. Bainum bought it and made it the Bainum Hotel. The hotel was heavily damaged in an arson fire and was condemned by the Maryville City Council and was torn down. History at theclio.

Stephenson Buys Bainum Building O. W. Stephenson acquired his second hotel building in Maryville this morning with the purchase of the Bainum hotel. Fourth and Market Street. from Mr. and Mrs. Walter Hilsabeck. He already owns the Hotel Linville building on Second and Main Street. which is under lease to Frank Morrissey. Mr. and Mrs. Stephenson have been leasing the Bainum since 1940, when they came here from Auburn, Neb. The Hilsabecks purchased the Bainum in 1947, the Stephensons retained their lease. The sale did not include the west portion of the hotel building owned by Donald Robey, which houses the Wagner barbershop and the Wilson fix-it shop. Stephenson will continue to lease the upper floor from Robey. Stephenson said he plans extensive remodeling and redecorating on the hotel. The purchase of the Bainum makes 10 hotels owned by the Stephenson family in this area. His brother, A. M. Stephenson. owns: Grand in Nebraska City and the Weaver Hotel and White City tourist court in Falls City. Another brother. A. F. Stephenson. owns the North American and the Nelson in Ottawa, Kas. His sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Lee Luke, own the Dale and the Sunset motor court in Holdredge. Neb., and his mother, Mrs. Stella Stephenson, owns the Clifton in Freemont The Stephensons, before coming to Maryville, owned a hotel in Auburn. Neb.. and managed hotels in Chicago for ten years The Hilsabecks will retain ownership of the lunchroom and barbershop north of the hotel.
