Corwin-Murrin Billboard at Maryville Sanitary Swimming Pool

Billboard for the Corwin-Murrin Clothing (Maryville’s oldest at the time)  at the Maryville Sanitary Swimming Pool (which is diagonally across from the old Washington School at First and Vine at what today is Autumn House).  The pool was privately owned.

Maryville Daily Forum December 12, 1923:

Sanitary Swimming Pool Is Incorporated. Articles of incorporation were filed in the recorder’s office yesterday, the corporation known as the Sanitary Swimming Pool of Maryville. The stockholders who signed the incorporation articles are George W. Aley, Ralph R. Aley, and William A. Phares.

Plans for winter skating never quite materialized.  Maryville bought it at auction in 1931 for back taxes but then sold it back to Aley.

It went back to being a municipal pool in 1935

In 1939, Maryville began looking for a new pool and location.

E. E. Rhoades and Harry Lyle Buy Interest -In Corwin-Murrin Clothing Co.

E. E. Rhoades and Harry Lyle have purchased stock owned by the Murrin heirs in the Corwin-Murrin Clothing Company, it was announced today. The stock was bought from Mrs. G. R. Cornelius and Dr. J. O. Murrin, who live in California. This clothing store, the oldest store on the square, will continue to operate under its incorporated name of Corwin-Murrin Clothing company.

Started 60 years ago by Hughes and Snapp, the store was later known as Montgomery-Corwin Clothing, and later as Corwin-Murrin.

Mr. Rhoades was named president of the company following its reorganization; Miss Mae Corwin, daughter of C. C. Corwin, who was active in the store for many years, was named vice-president; and Mr. Lyle was selected as secretary-treasurer.

Mr. Rhoades purchased stock in the Corwin-Murrin company in 1912, after moving here from Burlington Junction, where he had been connected with the Zarn Mercantile company. Mr. Lyle also began business in Maryville in 1912, when he helped organize the Montgomery-Lyle Clothing Company. He later sold his interest and bought an interest in the Reavis shoe store.

About 10 years ago, he became associated with the Corwin-Murrin Clothing company. Both Mr. Rhoades and Mr. Lyle are active in civic and fraternal organizations. Mr. Rhoades is a member of the Nodaway County Social Security Board, is a former director of the Chamber of Commerce, a member of the Country Club, a Mason, and an Elk. Mr. Lyle is a past master of the Masonic lodge, a past patron of the Eastern Star, active in the Chamber of Commerce, and, for 25 years, a member of the First Christian Church board.

The billboard for Nickel Plate Coffee was for a brand of coffee sold by Townsend Wholesale Grocery and was named after their star horse at Faustiana Farm.
