This is a photo of the first Spoofhounds football team. In 1921 L.E. Ziegler scolded his Maryville High School football team as “a bunch of Spoofounds.” The name stuck as a mascot, and the 1922 football team was officially called the Spoofhounds. Below is the caption.

The above photo of the 1922 Maryville High School football team, which went on to play, was submitted for publication by Joe Phipps, a member of the squad at the University of Maryville. In vertical rows, top to bottom and went on to become from left, are tackle John Curfman, end Harry “Jigs” Carstens, halfback football with the Orin Masters, back Orville Fannon, Harold “Bunk” Miller, Harold “Bun” Northwest team Obanion, end and captain Homer Ogden, guard-tackle Arthur Hartman, Curfman, Maurice Chick, Coach “Shorty” Lawrence, guard Bob Moundjoy, center Jarvin Bush, builder and owner guard Joe Phipps, guard L. Jones, tackle Marvin Epperson, quarterback Morris Chick, quarterback Vodrie Willouby, and center Harold “Red” Nodaway Valley Obanion and Masters all is an employee of Roleson. Ogden, Bush, Miller, Chick, Willouby, football at Northwest State, with Ogden later playing for Illinois and Bush for the University of Missouri. Obanion was one of the greatest punters in the early days of the pro Chicago Bears. Coach Lawrence became the coach of the following year. Four members of the team, Ogden and Phipps, now live in Maryville. Curfman is a resident of Curfman Apartments; Chick is a cashier at the Bank; Ogden is a cattle breeder and farmer; and Phipps is with the state revenue department.
The caption refers to Harold Banion as “one of the greatest punters in the early days of the pro Chicago Bears.” I do not see Banion mentioned in Bears history, and his 1949 obituary does not mention it.
Ziegler is not in the image as he became school superintendent in the 1922 season, and the Hounds were coached by H.F. Lawrence, who coached Northwest in 1923-1926. Lawrence died in 1970.
Below is a Google Nano Banano Pro AI color/enhancement of the image. I have found that Nano Banana produces pleasing photos, but it introduces many artifacts and distorts faces; in this case, it added a nonexistent photo of the team.
